The National Sugar Institute (NSI) was established in 1975 as a vocational training institute in the country, actively engaged in training of artisans and technicians for the sugar industry. The Sugar Development Corporation (SUDECO) formed it as a department on 30th December 1980, and the late first President of Tanzania, Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere, officially inaugurated it on 8th August 1981.
