Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT) was established by the Act of Parliament No.6 of 1997 as a higher technical training institution in Tanzania. DIT has a vision of becoming a leading technical education institution in addressing societal needs. The mission of DIT is to provide competence based technical education, through training, research, innovation and development of appropriate technology. DIT is an agent of industrialization, a progressive and customer-centered higher learning institution.
In order to offer post-FTC technical training, the College later added Diploma in Engineering (DE) programs in the four conventional engineering fields. In 1962, Laboratory Technology courses as well as Diploma in Technical Education (DTE) programs were launched. When the Diploma in Engineering (DE) courses were replaced by the equivalent Advanced Diploma in Engineering (ADE) programs in 1991, DTC’s role in the delivery of higher technical education was solidified. Nearly all engineering firms and organizations employ DIT, DE, and ADE graduates today. Positive comments from the relevant employers show that ADE graduates have generally performed well.
The National Council for Technical Education (NACTE) has granted DIT full accreditation. At the moment, DIT provides a large selection of professional applied sciences and engineering training courses and programs, both full-time and part-time. The Ordinary Diploma and Bachelor of Engineering programs offered by the Institute have taken the position of the FTC and ADE programs, respectively.
The Institute has also begun to offer a Bachelor of Technology in Laboratory Sciences as well as a few master’s level courses, including a Master of Technology in Computing and Communications, a Master of Engineering in Maintenance Management, a Master of Engineering in Computational Science and Engineering, and a Master of Engineering in Sustainable Energy Engineering. In addition, there are diploma programs in biotechnology, food science and technology, multimedia and film technology, information communication technology, and bachelor’s degrees in mining engineering and oil and gas.
An overview of the academic programs that DIT now offers is given in this prospectus, together with plans for the near future that will help the Institute fulfill its training objective. In chapters three and four, respectively, it also offers details on the policies and procedures governing admission to these programs as well as the related costs. The examination regulations, which include all aspects of the examinations held by the Institute for the Ordinary Diploma, Bachelor Degree, and Master Degree programs—programs that culminate in the awarding of NTAs 4–9 levels—are detailed in Chapter 5. The postgraduate guidelines contain more information on the processes for providing master’s degree programs at DIT.
