BBC Media Action Hiring Senior research Officer – Learning

The Senior Research Officer-Learning will mainly collaborate with the research team to gather data from our many research initiatives and transform it into internal and external learning outputs. This person will assist the research manager with learning documentation, communication, and sharing while collaborating closely with the projects, production, and capacity-building teams.

Main duties and accountabilities

  • To lead the implementation of BBC Media Action’s learning agenda in Tanzania, including evidence creation and documentation.
  • To efficiently record research, project learning, and results while communicating with partners, other departments, and key stakeholders.
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative research to get insights into learning patterns, best practices, and major study findings.
  • Analyze data from internal and external sources, as well as literature studies, to discover trends, difficulties, and areas for development.
  • Prepare detailed reports and presentations to share results and suggestions with capacity-building, production, project teams, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • To assist the research manager in completing research and learning initiatives as needed.
  • Prepare research results for a wide range of audiences, including academic papers and young media professionals.
  • Understand and follow BBC Media Action’s protection policy, staff code of conduct, and financial policy, particularly with retirement and fraud.
  • Participate in appropriate obligatory training on workplace safety and respect.
  • Report any safeguarding concerns immediately, either to the Country Director or by using the whistleblowing policy.
  • Carry out any additional responsibilities that may be assigned.

Required skills, knowledge, and experience:

  • Master’s degree in research, social sciences, media studies, or a similar discipline.
  • Fluent in English and Swahili, with experience producing reports and scripts in both languages.
  • At least three years of experience working for an international development organization where gathering insights and learning from diverse research efforts was a primary responsibility.
  • Ability to create and deliver abstracts and paper drafts at conferences and workshops.
  • Demonstrable experience developing, executing, reporting, and communicating research results utilizing a variety of stakeholder-relevant methodologies.
  • Demonstrable expertise handling fieldwork logistics in Tanzania, including ethical compliance, staff supervision, participant recruiting, and communication with authorities.
  • Practical IT skills include Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The ability to utilize statistical software, particularly SPSS, to interpret the information and perform average analysis and reporting would be advantageous.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with senior internal and external stakeholders, as well as research participants.
  • Self-motivated and eager to learn on their own initiative, displaying a proactive attitude and the capacity to produce on time and quickly without tight supervision.
  • Excellent organizational and administrative abilities, including the ability to adapt flexibly to quickly changing objectives, plan and prioritize tasks, and successfully modify outputs while keeping deadlines and resources in mind.

Desirable. 

  • An awareness or desire to study about communication methods, media forms, and journalism.
  • A creative writer capable of generating thoughts and sharing them with a wide range of people.
  • Strong and diverse research background, with the ability to boil down difficult knowledge into clear and effective suggestions.
  • Experience collaborating with a media production team to adapt research results to media formats and outputs.
