The incumbent functions as a language instructor for the mission, which involves creating materials and conducting classes in Kiswahili for direct-hire Americans and EFMs. Engages in and/or organizes a range of special projects, including the Mission quarterly cross-cultural orientation event. Offers fundamental translation services to the front office and others, including assistance with speech writing. Support for the translator/interpreter role as required. This role is situated within the Human Resource Office, with the incumbent reporting directly to the HRO.
Responsibilities:
- Arrange Kiswahili classes for the different student levels of ICASS agencies. Provide tailored and exclusive Swahili sessions to the front office across different scenarios. Carry out an interview and aptitude assessment to evaluate student proficiency levels. Employ various methods to enhance pronunciation and structure during instruction. Administers language assessments to students at various levels to evaluate their development.
- Documents student attendance, topics addressed, skill levels, classroom mini-library for books and additional teaching resources, and adjustments as necessary.
- Engage with the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) regarding funding and language training prerequisites. Establishes budgets for language programs funded by FSI. Compiles an annual FSI funding application to address the language requirements of the position.
- Coordinate and arrange FSI-funded Language and Cultural Immersion events along with additional off-site language activities. Possesses official Occasional Money Holder status for payments to immersion trip merchants.
- Develop, organize, and facilitate the Mission Cross Cultural Awareness Training for all mission personnel. Provide guidance to the front office regarding cultural matters.
- Oversee and coordinate the Post Language Program (PLP), providing assistance and ensuring quality assurance for language school instructors contracted by the Embassy and engaged locally.
- As a member of the DEIA council, propose, present, and promote ideas and projects that align with DEIA values. Collaborate with other DEIA committees and the Mission DEIA Council to propose and introduce new cultural awareness themes while maintaining post-basic cross-cultural awareness trainings to support DEIA mission principles.
- Assist other departments, teams, and agencies with language and cultural challenges.
- Compose a weekly article addressing issues related to the Swahili language or culture in collaboration with the CLO office to enhance the promotion of Swahili and cultural initiatives.

Qualifications:
- Education requirements include a bachelor’s degree in education or linguistics, as well as a certificate in teaching Kiswahili to foreigners.
