UNCDF’s finance mechanisms operate via three channels: 1) Local development finance, which empowers communities via fiscal decentralization, creative municipal finance, and structured project financing to boost local productive capacity for sustainable development. 2) Inclusive digital economies link individuals, households, and small businesses to financial eco-systems that catalyze participation in the local economy and provide tools for escaping poverty and managing financial lives; and 3) investment finance, which enables innovative financial structuring, de-risking, and capital deployment to drive SDG impact and domestic resource mobilization.

Job Purpose and Organizational Context

In this context, UNCDF is seeking an Infographic and Data Visual Designer Assistant to assist with the creation of creative visual content for use in all UNCDF communication methods, both internally and externally, as well as to support the agency’s internal/external ICT needs and other communication roles. The IGDVDA will report directly to the CookFund Monitoring and Evaluation Analyst in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Graphic Designing

  • The layout and design of UNCDF-produced information and communication items (e.g., banners, posters, booklets, newsletters, presentations, pamphlets, books, reports, calendars, bulletins, flyers, cards, e-journals, infographics, factsheets, etc.).
  • Create and produce creative and innovative visual content (graphics, charts, and illustrations, among other things) for use in project reporting and communication, as well as advocacy, via UNCDF’s social media accounts, print media, website, events, and other internal and external communication materials and platforms.
  • Contribute new design concepts and recording of field trips and different UNCDF and partner activities using photography, videography, and other visual media.
  • Improve and alter UNCDF-related artwork, images, charts, and other visual components.

2. Support Information Management and Communication Technology

  • Assist with data collection and analysis to extract insights and identify essential messages that need to be presented via graphics.
  • Convert complicated facts and information into readily consumable, visually attractive content that educates and engages the audience.
  • Create a narrative or tales based on the data for visual storytelling, ensuring that the audience can readily follow and comprehend the information given.
  • Prioritize and arrange data to highlight the most significant elements, directing the audience’s attention where it is most needed.
  • Assist with all ICT-related responsibilities allocated to him/her, including administration and frequent updates to UNCDF Tanzania websites.
  • Help with administrative tasks: Assist with the acquisition of IT products by communicating with vendors about quotations and equipment assessment in compliance with established standards.
  • Provide new ideas for disseminating the SDGs, the UNCDF strategy and engagement plan, and other material via UNCDF Tanzania’s social media accounts and other venues.

3. Support Branding and Development of Visibility Materials

  • Support the creation of knowledge and visibility products to convey critical information and success stories via UNCDF online channels.
  • Contribute unique design ideas for visual components of UNCDF and partner-coordinated events.
  • Perform any additional program support, such as communications and visibility activities, to assist the remaining UNCDF personnel.

4. Ensure Programme Support and Monitoring

  • Create data gathering forms (both digital and paper-based) to help with field data collection.
  • Assist with the quality testing and validation of data gathered in the program database, as well as providing frequent feedback to grantees on their performance and quality concerns.
  • Participate in field excursions for data validation and quality evaluation with grantees.
  • Participate in capacity development seminars for grantees on data collection using program tools.
  • Support any additional program activities that the supervisor may designate.

5. Support Communicate, organize and coordinate outreach activities with a variety of stakeholders.

  • Help the Monitoring and Communication Teams plan outreach efforts with diverse stakeholders.

Institutional Arrangement

The Infographic and Data Visual Designer Assistant will work under the guidance and direct supervision of the Cook Fund Monitoring and Evaluation Analyst.

Information Management & Technology:

  • IT Customer Support
    • Ability to support customers on IT-related issues and generate and contribute to continuous improvement processes to deliver a great user experience. Knowledge of ISO 9001 is desirable. ITIL certification or similar is desirable.
  • Configuration Management: Business analysis, requirements
    • Knowledge of configuration management changes, ability to manage and control the configuration change management process.

    • Communicate in a clear, concise and unambiguous manner both through written and verbal communication; tailor messages and choose communication methods depending on the audience. Ability to manage communications internally and externally, through media, social media and other appropriate channels

    • Ability to quickly analyse complex fact patterns and provide comprehensive, sensitive, and confidential ethics advice and guidance.

Required Skills and Experience

Minimum academic education:

  • Secondary Education is required or
  • A university degree (bachelor’s degree) in Computer Science, Graphic Design, Telecommunication, Information Technology, or an equivalent field will be given due consideration, but it is not a requirement.

Minimum years of relevant work experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years (with secondary education) or 2 years (with a bachelor’s degree) in computer science, graphic design, telecommunications, or information technology is required.

Required skills and competencies:

  • Computer literate in standard software applications, including proficiency in graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign), web design tools such as Dreamweaver and Flash, and/or other relevant digital tools.
  • Strong understanding of design principles, layout, typography, and colour theory.
  • Experience in interpreting and presenting data in a visually appealing and understandable manner, including understanding of different chart types, graphs, and other data representation techniques.
  • Experience in developing digital data collection tools and linking with analysis software for timely data interpretation, presentation, and decision-making.
  • Experience in system administration of Windows operating systems and Linux operating systems.
  • Familiarity with relevant programming languages or scripting languages.
  • Experience and knowledge of videography and photography and ability to edit and work with photos and videos.
  • Experience of graphic production from start to published/printed product with knowledge of printing processes (offset and digital) and colour management.

Desired skills in addition to the competencies covered in the competencies section:

  • Experience and knowledge of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the UNCDF’s work in Tanzania is an advantage.
  • Experience in data representation and design elements is an asset.
  • Experience in clear and mature style of design, demonstrating an understanding of the communication requirements of a UNCDF office, is desired.

Language Requirement:

  • Fluency in English and Swahili is required.

Professional Certificates:

  • Candidates with additional IT-related certifications such as Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or equivalent have a competitive advantage.
